Born in 1981 in Rabat, Morocco, Leïla Slimani settled in France in 1999. She holds degrees from Sciences Po Paris and the ESCP Business School. In 2014, she published her first novel, “Dans le Jardin de l’ogre” (Adèle in English translation) with publisher Gallimard. In 2016, her novel, “Chanson douce” (Gallimard) (The Perfect Nanny in English translation), won her the Prix Goncourt. Trained as a journalist who worked for a time at the magazine Jeune Afrique, in 2017 she published an essay on Morocco titled “Sexe et mensonges” (Sex and Lies in English translation) with publisher Les Arènes, as well as a graphic novel, “Paroles d’honneur” (Les Arènes). In 2020 she published “Le Pays des autres” (Gallimard), first volume of a series, and “Le Parfum des fleurs la nuit” with publisher Stock. Since 2017 she has been the personal representative of the French President Emmanuel Macron to the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie.
