FAQ

Questions fréquentes

I'm a new student. Where do I start?

If you are a complete beginner, you can register directly for any Beginner 1 (101 A1.1) class — no placement needed.

If you already know some French, or you're returning after more than a year away, take our short online placement test first. We'll contact you with your level and help you find the right class for your needs and availability.

How do I know my level?

Take the free online placement test (about 20 minutes). Our academic team reviews your result and emails you a level recommendation on the CECRL scale (A1–C2), the same framework used by every Alliance Française worldwide.

Please note: language levels expire after one year without taking any classes at AFdeLA.

How do I create an account?

Registration is handled in our secure enrollment system (ActiveNet). You must have an email address and be 13 or older to create an account.

If you are registering a child, create the account in your own name — not your child's. Once your account exists, you can add family members and register them for activities.

I'm a former student or member. Do I have an account?

If you took classes or were a member from 2012 onward, you likely have an account in our system, though older passwords may no longer work. Reset your password from the login page, or contact us at admin@afdela.org or 310-652-0306 and we'll help.

I forgot my password (or my account is locked). What do I do?

Click “Forgot your password?” on the sign-in page — resetting your password also unlocks your account. You'll receive a temporary password by email and be prompted to choose a new one.

If you still have trouble, call us at 310-652-0306. Please don't create a second account.

What can I do from my online account?

Register for classes, camps, children's events, exams, and open houses; purchase memberships and gift cards; and make donations.

You can also view your class and event schedules, update your personal information, and see your payment history.

How many accounts should a family have?

One primary account per family, created in the name of the family's primary contact. After creating it, use “Add Family Member” to add each child or relative — then register each person for their own activities from the one account.

How do I register my children for classes?

First make sure your children are attached to your account (My Account → Change information about family/friends). When you add a class to your cart, a drop-down lets you choose which family member to register.

To use the family membership discount, purchase the family membership before completing any class registrations.

I get a “missing prerequisite” error when registering.

This usually means the class is above your current registered French level. With the exception of Beginner 1, all group classes and workshops have level prerequisites listed in each course description.

Your level is set by the academic director after your placement test, or updated automatically when you complete a class. If you feel your level is wrong, contact us at 310-652-0306 or admin@afdela.org.

What happens if a class is full?

You can add your name to the waiting list. If a space opens or a new section is added, we'll contact you — first by phone, then by email. Placement on a waiting list does not guarantee a spot.

Which textbooks do classes use?

Group classes follow a book that is aligned with the CECRL framework. Your class description lists the exact book and dossiers covered.

How do I know if my membership is still valid?

Sign in and check My Account → Memberships and Usage for your expiration date. Membership is valid for one calendar year from the date of purchase.

Is membership tax deductible?

No — since membership provides a service (discounts and perks), it isn't considered a gift and is not tax deductible. Donations to the Alliance, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, are tax deductible.

Can I take official French exams at the Alliance?

Yes. AFdeLA is a passation center for the DELF (with registration through the Alliance Française de Pasadena) and an official test center for the TCF, including TCF-Canada and TCF-Québec. We also offer private exam-prep packages.

Does AFDELA accept books?

Yes — for donations, as well as selling books for charity and similar purposes.
