Les Demoiselles de Rochefort by Jacques Demy

index page image

Les Demoiselles de Rochefort is a musical about missed connections and second chances. Twins Delphine and Solange, a dance instructor and a music teacher (played by real-life sisters Catherine Deneuve and Françoise Dorléac), long for big-city life, success and romance in Paris; when a fair comes through their quiet port town, so does the possibility of escape. With its jazzy Michel Legrand score, pastel paradise of costumes, and divine supporting cast (George Chakiris, Grover Dale, Danielle Darrieux, Michel Piccoli, and Gene Kelly), Les Demoiselles de Rochefort is a tribute to Hollywood optimism from sixties French cinema’s preeminent dreamer.

With a plot of pure Shakespearean farce, witty dialogue and lyrics by Demy, and a magnificent jazz score by three-times Academy Award winner Michel Legrand.

Presented in French with English subtitles

Takes place on Tuesday, April 4th 2017 at 7:00 pm.

Transhumanism & Ethics:The enduring appeal of Artificial Intelligence – promises, accomplishments and disappointments

By  Professor Peter GABROVSKY, Ph.D

The ultimate goal in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been to construct a machine (in today’s terms, to program a computer), which can simulate any and all aspects of human intelligence (e.g. logical reasoning, creativity, ability to learn, ability to communicate in a natural language, etc). As a field of study, AI has a long history. Indeed, over the centuries, some relatively simple aspects of human intelligence have been successfully simulated by mechanical means. However, the advent of the computer stimulated the research in AI, and among other accomplishments, the human ability “to think logically” was effectively simulated. We will present a survey of AI’s accomplishments and address its future from a technical and ethical point of view.

Born in Sofia, Bulgaria, Prof. Gabrovsky studied cybernetics at Sofia University, and computer science at Warsaw University and Syracuse where he received his Ph.D. After working in the industry (with IBM as Senior Associate Programmer, and with UMB Financial as Executive Vice President), he taught at the University of Southern Main and, since 1989, at CSUN, as Professor of Computer Sciences. His research interests are in Artificial Intelligence, Logic Programming, and Non-standard (Alternative) Logics.

Presented in English with Q&A and cocktail reception.

Cine Club – Les Choristes

CINE CLUB – Thursday, May 11th

Les Choristes by Christophe Barratier

One night, the celebrated orchestra conductor Pierre Morhange receives an unexpected visit from Pépinot, someone he has not seen since his days in a grim boarding school during the late 1940s. Pépinot brings with him the diary of Clément Mathieu, the reluctant teacher who succeeded in changing both their lives. As they read the diary, both men are transported back to 1949, to the day when Clément arrived at the school, an establishment which was run with an iron fist by a despotic headmaster and where the pupils ran riot. The new teacher is dismayed by the animosity and brutality that surrounds him. But then he sees an opportunity to make a change for the better – by introducing his class of miserable rebels to the beauty of choral music…

For all its homespun simplicity, overly safe narrative style and occasional moments of shameless sentimentality, Les Choristes is a beautifully rendered and achingly effective film, one that will move virtually any audience to tears. The story is a simple one, a kind of latter day parable, in which a man who has failed in his own life manages to make a positive impact on the lives on others. Gérard Jugnot is perfectly cast as the film’s main character, playing the kind of modest, downtrodden yet sympathetic hero which has become his trademark and which has earned him his reputation as one of France’s best loved film actors of his generation. This is the first full length film to be directed by Christophe Barratier, a trained musician whose uncle, Jacques Perrin, makes a brief appearance in the film.

Book Club- Je m’en vais
May 23 @ 12:45 pm – 1:45 pm

Tuesday, May 23rd, 2017 at 12:45 pm

Je m’en vais is an 1999 Prix Goncourt-winning novel by the French author Jean Echenoz.

Jean Echenoz uses his own approach and has his own style which is the reason why he has so rapidly become France’s leading writer, with only five novels prior to this one under his belt.

Resume: Je m’en vais begins simply enough: the hero, an urbane Parisian art dealer, tells his wife he’s leaving her, drops his keys on the table, and walks out forever. His new existence is as madcap and unpredictable as his old was staid. French phenomenon Jean Echenoz’s newest novel is a bitingly humorous look at the uncertainties of love at midlife, a suspenseful crime caper, and a witty, satirical foray into corruption in the international art market.
