The Journalist:  an observer or a participant?
The question dates back to the Crimean War, a conflict in which Russia lost to an alliance of France, the United Kingdom, the Ottoman Empire, and Sardinia and the first photojournalism ever realized on a battlefield.

The images taken by the British photographer Roger Fenton (1819-1869) grabbed the attention of the public across Europe and America. For the first time, we saw the dead bodies of soldiers. The emotion aroused by these images, as well as the reporting by Sir William Howard Russell (1820 – 1907), considered to be the first modern war correspondent contributed to the emergence of humanitarian law in conflict zones.

A century and a half later, what is the role of the journalist? Is it the historian of the moment or a witness of his time? Are reports an accelerator or a brake on the violence of war? Slimane Zeghidour,  Senior Editor for TV5 MONDE will be our guest to discuss the role of the journalist in the time of internet, smart phones and social media.

Conference will be moderated by Natalie Handel, AFP / French Morning Presented in French with Q&A in English, Cocktail reception sponsored by Wines of the World and Michele La Porta.
